Our team was hired to assist in the addition of an extension to the existing hospital. The extension's structure is made of flat slabs resting on columns at approximately 6 m c/c intervals. The spacing was chosen to limit the structure's total thickness to 225 mm. This was dictated by the height of the existing building's stories of only 3.35 m. The spacing had to be restricted to keep as much space as possible for mechanical and electrical systems. The extension's structure is braced by four shear walls to absorb seismic stress, in accordance with the National Building Code. An expansion joint was built between the existing building and the extension in order to keep both structures independent

Exp is providing electrical design services for this project that was included in the Pentagon's $7.4B segment of the $787B economic stimulus package passed by Congress in 2009 and was the military's top priority in medical construction.

The military needed to upgrade its facilities to be in tune with California's seismic safety standards. Those were adopted following the 1994 Northridge earthquake that caused 23 hospitals to suspend all or part of their services in the wake of $3B in damages. The military does not have to comply with state of standards but advocated for a new Camp Pendleton hospital because of the apparent vulnerability to inpatient care at the existing facility.
